Problem with maintaining erection

I’m 34 year old male with height 5’11" and weight 84 kg. I have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (in 2018) for which I am taking pentasa. However, I have facing issues with maintaining erection (since 1 year) and it’s frustrating. My sex drive is completely normal and I do get firm erection sometimes but can’t keep it for more than 2 mins. I don’t have any other medical conditions, although my cholesterol is a bit high cholesterol 5.9 mmol/l. Please help me. What should I do? let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.

Hello there thank you for the question.

It is apparent that you are worried about your condition. It is advisable to meet a urologist as soon as possible. It is apparent that you are not able to keep a firm erection throughout a sexual intercourse which could be really frustrating.

Enjoy a beautiful moment with your loved one safely.

Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to keep a firm erection throughout an intercourse which could lead to impotence. It can affect self confidence and also cause friction between partners. It is important for you to speak to your partner and come up with a solution together. Most common symptom is inability to have an erection as well as reduced sexual desire.

Few tests should be done to diagnose your conditions such as a basic physical examination to check for nerve sensation followed by few special tests such as blood tests, urine tests, ultrasound and psychological exam which could elicit signs of anxiety or depression which can also cause erectile dysfunction. There are oral medications that can be prescribed by a doctor for your condition such as Sildenafil (Viagra), Tadalafil (Adcirca, Cialis), Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn) and Avanafil (Stendra).

This medications increases blood flow to penis and allows you to get an erection in response to sexual stimulation. The medications differ in dosage, how long they work and side effects. There are few possible side effects including flushing, nasal congestion, headache, visual changes, backache and stomach upset.

Besides oral medications, there are also surgical procedures such as placing penile pump and penile implant. This procedure helps in erection. There are chances of infection if its not taken care properly. Hence it is advisable to meet a urologist for recovery.

As there are many causes, without a full history and examination, it is advised to see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis and seek appropriate treatment. In order for us to provide you with an accurate choice of treatment and management, we need additional details to explore further into your current complaints. Therefore, we greatly suggest that you refer this to your nearest medical doctor. You may also click on this link (DoctorOnCall) to speak with our doctors online.
