  • Hello there. Thank you for the question. It seems to me that this problem has been bothering you for a while now. Headaches are a very common health issues and can be caused by a lot of factors. Epidemiologically, about 70% of the population have a headache at least once per year. Women are more commonly affected compared to men. Headache can be classified into primary and secondary headaches.

  • Primary headaches are idiopathic, which means the cause is unknown. For example, migraine and tension-type headache. Secondary headaches are usually a warning symptom of an underlying problem, such as tumour in the brain or a bleed in the brain due to trauma or high blood pressure.

  • As for you, I will need a detailed account of the headache such as the location, is it one-sided or double-sided, the intensity of the pain, the nature of the pain such as stabbing or throbbing and other symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, heightened sensitivity to smell, light or sound and how long does the headache lasts.

  • As the medication you are given is not working, try to adjust several things in your routine. Firstly, you should keep a headache diary and show it to your doctor in the next appointment. Make sure you have a regular sleeping pattern. Intake of cheese, wine and chocolate should be taken with cautious, bearing in mind that they can be a trigger to the headache.

  • Lifestyle changes such as yoga exercises to deal with stress may help. Many types of headache are unproblematic. However, as you are regularly taking medication, you should see a doctor as the medication may have side effects especially ulcer formation in the stomach with prolonged use. In any case that the headache reaches an extremely intense pain, immediately seek a doctor’s attention.
