Hi nice to know you. Atopic dermatitis or also called as eczema is a condition where your skin becomes red and itchy. It is quite common in children but can occur really at any age. Atopic dermatitis is long lasting or chronic and tends to occur periodically. It can be along with asthma or allergic rhinitis or hay fever.

No absolute treatment has been found for eczema atopic dermatitis. But treatments and home steps can prevent itching and new outbreaks. For example, it helps to avoid harsh soaps, wash and clean your skin regularly, and apply medications such as creams or ointments.

Atopic dermatitis or eczema signs and symptoms can varies from person to person such as:

  • dry skin
  • itching

The lesions appear as brownish gray colour patches, especially on the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, neck, upper chest, eyelids, inside the bend of the elbows and knees, and in infants, the face and scalp.

A small and raised bumps which can leak fluid and crust over when it is scratched. Thickened, cracked, scaly skin often present as well. When you scratch your skin it may cause redness and swelling.

Atopic dermatitis or eczema most often starts before age 5 and can persist into teenager and adulthood. For some patients, it occurs periodically and then clears up for a time, even for couple of years.

Do meet your local GP if:-

  • Is so uncomfortable that the eczema is affecting your sleep and daily activities
  • You has a known skin infection (you can look for red lines, discharge or yellow scabs)
