Had to wake up from sleep because I had problem to catch my breath
I am a 27 years old male, weight around 107kg. Once in a while, i suddenly had to wake up from sleep because I had problem to catch my breath. It’s really bothering me now. Does my heavy body weight contribute to this problem doctor?

Hi, thank you for your question. I would say it is quite likely your body weight is related to your current conditions. This condition is known as obstructive sleep apnea that is commonly related to excess weight.
People with this condition will wake up from sleep after breathing stopped after a period of time. Other than that, you will have loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness due to poor night sleep.
People with obesity can have enlarged adenoid or tonsils that block the airway, causing breathing to stop while lying down during the sleep. There are several other causes that may contribute to obstructive sleep apnea such as smoking, allergies or anatomical structures include narrow throat and thick neck. In adults, excessive smoking, drinking or use of sedatives can be risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea.
This condition should be treated seriously because it can cause a lot of complications in the long term. It is associated with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, abnormal heart rhythm and hypothyroidism. These complications are related to the release of stress hormone in response to poor sleep and reduced blood oxygen level.
It is recommended to seek help from healthcare providers to have a thorough checkup. In most cases, doctor will advise you on the control of risk factors that i mentioned above. If the condition is more serious than expected, you may need continuous positive airway pressure or surgical intervention to improve your conditions. I hope that i have answered your questions and happy days ahead !!!
