I can’t sleep at night although when I am sleepy

Hi, I’m 20 year old university student. I can’t sleep at night. I did try to keep my phone to the side and not in the surrounding, I still can’t seem to close my eyes. I just ended up staring at the wall and use my phone. It’s been going on for about a month, and I am feeling sleep deprived day by day. I really have no idea what should I do, I tried sleep hypnosis… Breathing exercises, but nothing works. I can’t seem to calm my mind although I feel calm. I would really like a say on this because I can’t go on without sleeping anymore. Thank u

Hello and good afternoon.

Thank you for your question.

Based on your question, I understand that you are worried about your situation. I will try to help you.

Many college students are sleep deprived because they go to sleep late or unable to fall asleep and wake up for classes before adequate sleep is obtained. Two primary processes govern how much sleep is obtained, the homeostatic sleep drive and the circadian rhythm. The circadian system (internal clock) helps to regulate sleep/wake cycles and hormonal secretions while the homeostatic sleep drive increases the need for sleep as the period of wakefulness lengthens.
Physiologically, adolescents and young adults tend to have a delayed circadian preference. There are multiple reasons for sleep deprivation in young adults. For examples,

  • Inadequate sleep hygiene
  • Caffeine and energy drinks
  • Long hours usage of technology(mobile, laptops)

Therefore I highly recommend you speak to your doctor regarding your situation to provide you with the safest and best route of care to manage your condition as a whole, taking into account the various factors mentioned above and more. You can contact our doctor online for further information and treatment.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you.
