Prolonged Sore Throats & Light Cough
Hye Doc. Ive been having sore throat for the past 5-6 days. It is still the same eventho ive taken panadol, cough syrup and lozenges. Am afraid that i got infected by covid. I dont have any other symptoms except itchy, sore throat and light cough. Since PKP, i went out 3-4 times for groceries. Thats all. Are there any possibilities of covid? Or should i go and take the test at the hospital. I live with my parents. Both are 64. And i have a 5mos baby. They are fragile. Am so worried. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks in advance.

We understand your worries especially with the development of symptoms indicative but not exclusive of COVID-19.
For you information, WHO listed common symptoms for COVID-19 infection as follows:
- Fever (morea than 37.5 degrees celcius)
- Fatigue
- Cough
- Aches and pains
- Sorethroat
- Headaches
- Shortness of breath
Apart from COVID-19, prolonged sore throat can be due to various health conditions such as:
- common cold
- Influenza
- Tonsillitis
- Pharyngitis
- Dehydration
As listed above, the symptoms are very vague and mimic other disease as well. Hence, the needs of screening test depends on your risk profile. To assess your risk, you are encouraged to answer the quiz on Risk Assessment for COVID-19 to evaluate your health status in regards to this disease. After completing this quiz, you will be classified into several categories.
I can’t prescribed you any medication because the causes of the problem need to be sort out before we dispense medication to patient. However, apart from medication, here are some home remedies that you can try to soothe your throat.
- Honey
- Breath in steam from hot water
- Ginger
- Gargle with salt water
