Shortness of breath/chest tightness

Saya perempuan, umur 26 tahun. Saya mengalami masalah shortness of breathe and chest tightness for 4 days. Saya dah berjumpa dgn doktor on the 2nd day sbb sy igtkan minor heart attack (had ecg done and was normal, so dah ruled heart attack out). Doc said i was probably having an anxiety attack. He gave me ubat pernafasan. But now, i’m still having this minor chest tightness and shortness of breathe but it was on and off . Still got me worried that this could be something else . Got me thinking to the extend of i might be having covid due to this is also the symptoms. Could this be covid, doc ? I takde batuk. Please comment on this ? Could the symptoms just be shortness of breathe without other symptoms on the side ? If it’s not covid, then maybe its really just an anxiety attack ? And i might just be having minor one now - even i’m not sure . Thing is this is my first time experiencing this . So, i just dont know how to loosen up :pensive: Pls elaborate and help me understand what this could be. Thanks Doc

Hi and thank you for the question.

Through the explanation you gave above, I understand the concern you might have over this matter. For your information, there are a few factors that could cause the problems you are having as in:

  • asthma
  • pneumonia is an infection of the lungs
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • pulmonary embolism is blockage of the artery leading to the lungs
  • pulmonary hypertension is a high blood pressure condition affecting the arteries of the lung
  • stress and anxiety
  • heart conditions as heart attack

Due to the fact that the doctor has ruled out any heart condition using ECG and there are no other symptoms pointing out at any other lung disease, it could be due to stress and anxiety. COVID-19 can be occur if you have a recent close contact with a positive case or went to any place with high cases of COVID-19. Symptoms of COVID-19 should be followed with fever, dry cough and tiredness.

I would like to recommend you to relax and meditate to prevent the symptoms if you are having an anxiety attack. Although this is a general explanation of the condition, I advice you to go to the nearest clinic if you are having these symptoms,:

  • shortness of breath becomes severe
  • shortness of breath keeps you doing daily activities
  • shortness of breath when lying down
  • swelling in the ankles and feet
  • high fever and chills
  • cough
