  • Hi, thank you for the question. There are variety of birth control pills in the market and it must be hard to make the best choice. So i would give you a rough guide of birth control available in malaysia. However, you need to discuss with your doctor to get the make informed decision. Birth control pills is safe and effective, making it the best choice of contraception. In the market, there are two main kinds of birth control pills. They can be progestin only pills or a combination of progesterone and estrogen pills.

  • These hormones prevent ovulation during your menstrual cycle and prevent sperm from reaching the egg by thickening of your uterus lining. For combination birth control pills, you can take the conventional way or continuously. In the conventional way, you will need to take 21 active pills and 7 inactive pills or 24 active pills and 4 inactive pills. When you are taking the inactive pills (does not contain hormone), you will bleed every month.

  • If you use it continuously, the packs has 84 active pills and 7 inactive pills, which makes you bleed about 4 times a year. Before taking any birth control pills, doctor need to know your medical history and medications taken. Bear in mind that birth control pills do not protect you from sexual trasmitted diseases. The best way of preventing sexual transmitted diseases is having safe sex using condom.

  • When you have these health conditions, you are not recommended to take birth control pills, such as breastfeeding, history of deep vein thrombosis, liver disease, history of breast cancer, unexplained uterine bleeding and history of stroke or heart diseases. The lists are not exhaustive and doctor will explain to you more during the consultation. Have a good day !!!
