Hi and thanks for your question, for years people have touted the legendary Botox injection and it’s anti-ageing properties, but does it truly slows down the ageing process? No! It allows you to look younger by taking away all the wrinkles but your body in fact continues to age. Here are some facts on Botox.
- Did you know then Botox is a toxin from a bacterium? It comes from a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum and this bacterium produces the toxin which weakens or paralyzes muscle. Because it is injected locally, it paralyzes your facial muscles, making the wrinkles go away. However, if administered into the blood at a large amount, there might be paralysis and even death if it paralyzed the muscles that helps you breath!
- How is the treatment course like? Well, you will meet with a doctor where he will have a detailed history and examination done for you. Once he deems you are fit to undergo the procedure, it will then involve a tiny needle to your wrinkle sites. The effects can be seen in a few days and will slowly decline after 3 or 4 months. This is to say that the effect is not instant, and it will not last forever. If you receive repeated injections at the same site, you may have a more prolonged effect of 6 months. This may be seen as a good thing but it really isn’t, it’s actually your facial muscles weakening due to prolong disuse.
- what are the potential side effects?
• Drooping of the eyebrow
• Drooping of the eyelid
• Double vision
• Excessive tearing
• Dry eyes
• Drooping mouth causing asymmetry
• Difficulty in swallowing
These effects are rare and temporary and may last from 2-12 weeks. Clinically, this drug is generally safe. The drug itself costs around RM30.
