Thanks for submitting the above question and good morning. I hope you are doing fine. I’m sorry to tell you and your husband that there are relationship between smoking or obesity with getting pregnant. This is because our weight can affect the hypothalamus which is a gland in your brain that is responsible for regulating various biological processes in our body.

This includes your menstrual cycle. Extreme weight loss, a low calorie diet and by being very underweight can stresses out the hypothalamus. This will cause your body do not release the oestrogen hormone that is needed to prepare the lining of the uterus. The same happens with eating problems such as bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa, which also cause oestrogen levels to go really low.

On the other hand, being obese or gaining a lot of weight in a short period of time can cause your body to produce too much or excessive oestrogen. The overload can cause you to go for months without ovulating and causing difficulties in getting pregnant. It also can cause the endometrial lining to become unstable and become overgrow, resulting in irregular, heavy or even missed periods.

Normally, gaining weight if you are below the normal weight should help your periods cycle to return to usual. Smoking also can cause impotence and having an infetility process. It is well known that the smoker will have all sorts of health issue later in their life. You can advice your husband to stop or educe the smoking habits for a greater future. Good luck!
