Recently I went into an esophagectomy surgery

Hi doctor, recently I went into an esophagectomy surgery to remove my cancerous esophagus. After undergone the operation, the doctor mention that I may have GERD. Can you help to explain in details about GERD?

Hello there and thanks for your kind question. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), commonly referred to as GERD or acid reflux problem, is a condition in which some of the content of the stomach come backs up or refluxes into the esophagus. The liquid can cause inflammation and damage to the lining of oesophagus although visible signs of inflammation only occur in a minority of patients. The return of liquid usually contains acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach. It will cause you to feel like burning sensation.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition. Once it starts, it usually stays there for a years. If there is injury to the lining of the oesophagus which also called as oesophagitis, this also is a chronic condition. Besides that, after the oesophagus has cured with treatment and treatment is stopped, the injury will reoccured in most people within a few months.

In fact, reflux of the stomach’s watery contents into the oesophagus occurs in majority of normal individuals. 1 study found that reflux occurs as frequently in normal individuals as in patients with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In patients with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), however, the refluxed liquid that has acid concentration more often, and the acid stays in the oesophagus longer. It has also been found that liquid refluxes to a higher level in the esophagus in patients with Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) than normal individuals.
