Both legs swollen (from thigh to toes)

My father in law is 89 yrs old. He is a skinny person. Initially his feet was swollen and we did not take it seriously. After a few months, we started to noticed that both of his legs become very big and when pressed it feels hard not like normal. I find he has difficulty to walk or lift up his leg. He also gets tired easily after walking few steps (short of breath). Doctor, please advise how you can help us to cure his swollen legs. Thank you

Leg swelling can caused by the retention of fluid in leg tissues and known as peripheral edema. It can be caused by a problem with the circulatory system, the lymphatic system or the kidneys.

Leg swelling isn’t always a sign of a heart or circulation problem. You may often experience swelling due to fluid buildup from being overweight, being inactive, after sitting or standing for a long time, or wearing tight stockings.

Factors related to fluid buildup include:

  • Acute kidney failure
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Cirrhosis
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Heart failure
  • Hormone therapy
  • Lymphedema

I suggest you to bring your father to hospital for further investigation to avoid deteriorating his health condition.
