Can a urine pregnancy came out negative
I am a woman in my mid 20’s and just got married 6 months ago. I have missed my period for about 2 months now, I did my urine pregnancy test but it came out negative. Can a urine pregnancy came out negative even if I am pregnant? How to know which is which? Thanks doc

Hello and thank you for submitting your question to us. In your situation, there two angles which we could approach to identify your problem. One is the angle of a false negative pregnancy, and the second is causes for missed periods. There are many reasons that a home pregnancy test shows a false negative result.
Sometimes false negatives are due to taking the test too early in the pregnancy and the test kit is unable to detect very low levels of HCG. But as you have been having missed periods for two months this is unlikely your cause. Another reason would be incorrect technique of performing the pregnancy test. Using diluted urine, or checking for the results too fast can also be a reason for you to obtain a false negative result.
For a more accurate result, take the test first thing in the morning when the urine is most concentrated and give the test enough time to work. Sometimes, the pregnancy test kit that you have bought could be faulty. If that is the reason, you can try a different brand of pregnancy test to see if the test results come out differently.
On the other hand, it may also be possible that you are not pregnant and having missed periods. There are several reasons women undergo irregular periods. Some of them are:
• Prolonged period of stress
• Perimenopausal women
• Intense exercise or significant weight loss
• Obesity
• Birth control
• Polycystic ovarian syndrome
In your situation, I would advise you to take another pregnancy test at home after a few days. Go visit your gynecologist to get an ultrasound scan if your subsequent pregnancy tests turn out negative. If the doctor has ruled out pregnancy, get a full check-up to identify the cause of your missed periods.
