There are whitish pacthes in his mouth

I have a 3 year old boy and noticed that there are whitish pacthes in his mouth. He cries more frequently than usual. Can you help to explain what is happening, doctor?

  • Hey and thank you for the question. Firstly, Candida infections are a common kind of mouth infection. These infections also called oral candidiasis or oral thrush called Candida albicans. Candida albicans is located in the mouths of about fifty percent of the world’s population. It is considered as a normal component in our oral cavity.

  • This candida infection carriage state is not considered a disease, but when Candida species become infectious and invade host tissue in mouth, oral thrush can occur. This change usually consist an opportunistic infection by a normally harmless bacteria in the mouth. Symptoms of yeast infections includes Itchiness, irritation, soreness, burning, and white colour patch (and sometimes swelling) in our mouth.

  • A candida infection won’t cause or affect our general health. Thrush is characterized by white spots on the left, right and roof of the mouth and sometimes on the tongue. This condition is not too serious and can easily treated. The baby or children can get thrush as well without having a yeast infection during delivery.

  • With that, my advice for you is to go and report your local doctor about your children current situation or problems, let them know because they might able to give you a proper solution. The investigations that can be done to diagnose oral thrush include taking the oral swabs, oral rinse or even oral smears. Oral swabs is only done if the culture of the micro organisms is needed. The specimen will be taken from a 3 different sites in the mouth. Sometimes blood tests are also needed for full blood count and haematinics.
