Heart palpitations throughout the days

Answered by: Dr Sashini Seeni

Hi doctor. I’m a female in my early 20s and it feels like I’ve been having heart palpitations on and off for most of the day for about 1-2 months now. I have also been having flashes of heat. I’m fairly certain it’s anxiety and have also done a blood test to disprove that it is due to it being a thyroid issue, but I’m still fairly concerned it might be something else. Would you recommend that I visit a cardiologist to double check? Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your questions. The following answers regarding your current queries are just general descriptions due to the limited information provided by you. Click on this link (DoctorOnCall) for a private consultation with our doctors.

First and foremost, we truly understand your concerns regarding your symptoms and other health problems you might be facing. From your complaints, we believe that your condition may have multifactorial causes such as:

  • Heart rhythm disorder
  • Adrenal glands problem
  • Side effect of medications
  • Anxiety

Anxiety can be made a diagnosis after excluding other medical causes of palpitations. Here are some of the symptoms of anxiety:

  • nervousness, restlessness, or being tense
  • feelings of danger, panic, or dread
  • rapid heart rate
  • rapid breathing, or hyperventilation
  • increased or heavy sweating
  • trembling or muscle twitching
  • weakness and lethargy
  • difficulty focusing or thinking clearly about anything other than the thing you’re worried about
  • insomnia
  • digestive or gastrointestinal problems, such as gas, constipation, or diarrhea
  • a strong desire to avoid the things that trigger your anxiety
  • obsessions about certain ideas, a sign of obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • performing certain behaviors over and over again
  • anxiety surrounding a particular life event or experience that has occurred in the past, especially indicative of post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD)

In order for us to provide you with an accurate choice of treatment and management, we need additional details to explore further into your current complaints. Therefore, we greatly suggest that you refer this to a cardiologist to make a through history taking, physical examination and conduct tests before making any conclusion.
