My 78 year old mum has itching legs and nerve pains

My 78 year old mum has itching legs and nerve pains. Can you recommend tablets and cream for her itchiness?

Greetings. Thank you for your questions.

First and foremost, we truly understand your concerns regarding your mother’s symptoms. From your complaints you stated above, we believe that your mother’s itchy skin may have multifactorial causes such as:

  • Fungal infections
  • Eczema: usually caused by allergies
  • Ringworm
  • Dermatitis: inflammation of the skin that can be caused by allergies to chemicals usually on detergent products
  • Psoriasis
  • Bed bugs

Besides, regarding nerve pain, there are many causes of nerve pain. Some of it is due to infections such as shingles, multiple sclerosis, any nerve compression, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and trauma. Some nerve pain can be really severe and debilitating. Investigations should be done to find out what causes nerve pain such as blood glucose level, blood culture x-ray of the spine and renal profile. Management of nerve pain is by treating the underlying cause. However, in some cases, pain reliever needs to be prescribed.
