What kind of food should be avoided in patient with asthma

What kind of food should be avoided in patient with asthma? Do they have to follow strict diet? I have child with asthma and it is very difficult to feed him because of our fear that he will get an attack. Help us doctor.

Hi there! Thank you for your question. There’s no conclusive evidence that a specific diet has an effect on the frequency or severity of asthma attacks. Nevertheless, eating fresh, nutritious foods may improve your overall health as well as your asthma symptoms due to the improvement in lung function. Obesity is an important risk factor and may be more severe and more difficult to treat for obese patients.

Eat a balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight. Add Vitamin D-rich foods into your diet. Getting enough vitamin D may help reduce the number of asthma attacks in children. Sources of vitamin D include; salmon, milk, orange, eggs, carrots and leafy vegetables. Also add vitamin A-rich food. In children with asthma, higher levels of vitamin A also increases lung function.

Good sources of vitamin A are carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, broccoli, apples and bananas. Add magnesium. A study found that there is an increased incidence of low lung flow and volume among children. Examples of magnesium-rich foods; spinach, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate and salmon. Inhaling magnesium (through a nebulizer) is another good way to treat asthma attacks.

Foods to avoid are :

  1. Sulfites. Sulfites are a type of preservative that may worsen asthma. They’re found in dried fruits, pckled food, cherries, shrimp and bottled lemon and lime juice
  2. Foods that cause gas. Eating large meals or foods that cause gas will put pressure on your diaphragm, especially if you have acid reflux and may trigger asthma attacks. Examples these foods include beans, cabbage, carbonated drinks, onions, garlic and fried foods.
  3. Artificial ingredients. Chemical preservatives, flavorings, and colorings are often found in processed and fast food. Some people with asthma may be sensitive or allergic to these artificial ingredients.
  4. Common allergens. People with food allergies may also have asthma. The most common allergens include dairy products, shellfish, wheat and nuts
