Isotretinoin and depressions

Hi, I’m a 19 years old guy, having acne problem since 16 years old. I had been on different types of antibiotics but all of them were not really effective and the slight improvements were just temporary. I have found out isotretinoin is really effective in treating acne, but the problem is that I’m having depression and anxiety for few years as well. I had consulted two dermatologists about taking this medication but they refused to start me on it, even though my mental status is currently well-controlled with my medication (sertraline). My question is that in Malaysia, is depressed person completely banned from taking isotretinoin?

Hi and thank you for asking us

Through the question and statement you gave on the above section, i completely understand your concern over this matter. For your information, depression by taking isotretinoin is uncommon it doesn’t remove the fact that it increase the risk of depression especially on pre-existing cases. Since, you have a history of depression it is unwise to give a medication that could worsen your condition. As your mental health needs to be evaluated by a specialist, I am unable to give clarification if your condition is suitable to take the medication. I suggest you discuss it with your dermatologist to see what is the best plan for you.
